How to Prepare the Yoruba Thick and Spicy Yam Porridge (Asaro)


Nigerians have some of the healthiest recipes around the world. As a matter of fact, most of their methods are organic, thus suitable for the health. In this write up we are going to write on one of Nigeria’s particular way called Asaro.

Asaro is a recipe that is common among the Yoruba people of Nigeria. It is thick and spicy yam porridge. For those who have tasted this meal before, they can cross seven seas to feel again. In other words, it is extraordinarily delicious.
Unlike most other yam porridge recipe in Nigeria, Asaro is unique with unique color, taste, and feel. Generally, Asaro is made with Tomato paste fried with palm oil, pepper, and onions.

Ingredients for Preparing Asaro


  • The half tuber of medium yam

  • Two cooking spoonful of palm oil

  • The half cup of washed spinach leaves (Green vegetable)

  • 4 long peppers, however, if you don’t like much pepper, you can use two

  • 2 medium tomatoes and one big chopped onion


You can add meat, smoked fish or stockfish, the choice is yours to make
Get crayfish and grind them, after which you add two tablespoons to the meal
 Curry and thyme, including salt to bring out the taste.

Once you have all the above ingredients in place, the next step is to start cooking it. It may interest you to know that Asaro is very sensitive, thus the need to give it proper attention while preparing it.

Follow the instruction below to prepare you spicy and tasty Asaro recipe;

  1.    As a rule, you must wash your fish very well, if possible use boil water to remove it before adding it. This is very important for health reasons. 
  2.  Once you wash your fish or any other items you are cooking with, blend the tomatoes and peppers together. After mixing the duo, heat your palm oil and sauté with onions for proper garnishing. Once the oil (Palm oil) is translucent, pour the pepper and tomatoes mixtures in it and allow it to fry for about 12 minutes. Usually, once you no longer feel the raw taste of tomatoes in the mix, then it is okay. To avoid burning, try to turn the mixture at the interval. 
  3.     Peel your yam, cut it into small pieces, wash it and place in a clean pot. To get the taste, add some salt and crayfish with it. Add enough water in the bowl, cover it and allow it to boil for about 10 minutes.
  4.     There are instances when the yam will be a bit tender, if you notice this, combine with fried tomatoes and reduce the thickness by adding little water. This is the stage you will add your seasoning cubes, curry, thyme and any other item that will aid its taste.
  5.    Allow it to cook for an additional 15 minutes till you notice softness in the yam. At this stage, you can now mash some of the yams by turning them and allow it to cook for an additional 5 minutes. Note, the heat should be deficient, to avoid burn. 
  6.     After fulfilling all the stages above, add you are chopped and washed vegetable to the food, garnish it and allow it to heat for about 5 minutes. Once the 5 minutes is up, put off the heat.
